I’ve been writing a lot lately about how blogging can help promote your business online, and ways to overcome your blogging objections. I’ve been focusing on blogging because I think it’s an incredibly useful way for businesses to connect with their customers, build relationships, and promote their business in a way that is also beneficial for the reader.
Bloggers Boot Camp really gets into the nuts and bolts of running a blog. Written by industry veterans Charlie White (Mashable, Gizmodo) and John Biggs (Gizmodo, TechCrunch), this book is packed to the brim with actionable insight and practical advice.
Who is Bloggers Boot Camp For?
The primary target of this title is entrepreneurs who want to make money directly from blogging, or those who are interested in blogging full time. While that isn’t exactly my target audience here, I do think small businesses who want to use blogging as part of their marketing strategy could still get a lot from Bloggers Boot Camp because it focuses on so much more than the business aspects of blogging.
There is a lot of fantastic, practical advice here for the things people really struggle with when they start blogging, such as finding great topics to write about, maintaining a schedule, and dealing with the community that forms around your blog.
What does Bloggers Boot Camp Cover?
The book begins in a very linear way, by first focusing on figuring out exactly what you’re going to be blogging about, and why it’s so important to target a specific niche. From there it explores some of the more technical aspects of blogging, like setting up the blogging platform and a primer on basic HTML and CSS. With those table-setting chapters out of the way, Bloggers Boot Camp really finds its stride as it explores the real business of blogging.
There are detailed discussions about automation, doing proper research, writing strategies, effectively dealing with hostile readers, blogging ethics, measuring traffic, and planning for the future. There’s even a nice appendix with some additional tips and tricks.
For a title with less than 200 pages, it covers an incredible amount of ground. It moves at a brisk pace, so make sure you’re reading closely.
- The thing that most impressed me about this title was the strong focus on ethics. That can be a pretty dry subject, so you don’t really see it get a lot of attention, but it’s incredibly important. This is especially true to those who are working hard to build and maintain a reputation with readers and customers.
- Peppered throughout the book at “War Stories”, which are brief anecdotes that relate the current lesson to the personal experience of one of the writers. Not only were these extremely informative, the stories were often quite entertaining in their own right.
- Bloggers Boot Camp contains a ton of great writing advice that covers the entire gamut of the process, from finding inspiration and doing research, to writing effective and engaging copy and keeping the readers involved. This sort of advice is difficult to do well, and often feels tacked on and lazy, but White and Biggs do an excellent job of it here.
- The only real complaint I have about Bloggers Boot Camp is the physical size of the book. It measures in at 8.2 inches by 10.8 inches, which is quite large, and more than a little ungainly when you’re trying to read it.
Bloggers Boot Camp is packed full of fantastic strategies to help you get your blog off the ground, and keep it moving in the right direction after its launched. While it’s written primarily for those who are interested in full-time blogging, the vast majority of the advice is applicable to anyone interested in blogging.
